Kimberley Process (KP) certificates supposedly issued by Cameroon are in the market, though Cameroon is not a KP Participant and therefore cannot issue KP certificates.
The KP said it is aware of a number of recent incidents where traders were presented with documents purporting to be KP certificates from Cameroon.
“Any document purporting to be a Kimberley Process certificate from Cameroon is a fake and should not be used,” the monitoring organization warned.
“No rough diamonds may be imported from Cameroon into the territory of any Kimberley Process participant,” it added.
Although Cameroon is not a member of KP, it is making good progress toward becoming one, KP reported, adding it will publish a notice when Cameroon achieves Participant status. Once a Participant, it is eligible to issue certificates and trade rough diamonds with other Participants.
KP is requesting that anyone having information regarding fake Cameroonian certificates be sent to kpcs.chair@state.gov.
